What Fits in a Dumpster

The cubic-yard number on a dumpster does not always click until you map it to what you are actually doing. Below are real project types, the waste they usually generate, and the right Big Red Box size for each.

Residential projects

Every project below maps to one of our three roll-off dumpster sizes — 15, 30, or 40 yard. Here is how the common jobs shake out.

Single-room declutter (one bedroom, one closet): smaller than a 15 yard. Most people do not rent a dumpster for this — a few car trips to the dump is easier.

Garage cleanout (one-car or two-car): 15 yard fits most cases.

Whole-house declutter or post-move cleanout: 30 yard for most homes.

Single bathroom remodel: 15 yard.

Full kitchen tear-out: 30 yard. Cabinets, drywall, flooring, and old appliances combined.

Basement finish (waste removal phase): 15 or 30 depending on size.

Attic cleanout with old insulation: 15 yard.

Roofing

Small single-story home, up to 1,500 sqft, single layer: 15 yard.

Standard single-family home, 1,500 to 3,000 sqft, single layer: 30 yard.

Large home or multi-layer tear-off: 40 yard, or a 30 with one swap.

Shingles run heavy. We quote flat-rate based on roof size — call before you book.

New construction

Small residential build (under 2,500 sqft): one 30 yard with one swap usually covers framing through trim.

Mid-size residential build: 30 yard with 2 to 3 swaps, or a 40 the whole way.

Large or multi-unit builds: 40 yard with a regular swap schedule.

Demolition

Single-room demo (kitchen, bath): 30 yard.

Whole-house interior gut: 40 yard with 2 to 4 swaps.

Full structural demo: 40 yard with 4 to 6 swaps.

Concrete-heavy demo (pool removal, driveway tear-out): 40 yard with strict weight management — we will talk through it.

Commercial and yard waste

Office tenant change cleanout: 30 yard usually fits.

Restaurant gut for a renovation: 40 yard, often with a swap.

Storm cleanup on a residential lot: 30 yard.

Brush and yard waste from a heavy clearing job: 30 or 40 depending on volume.

No matter the size, some things cannot go in the box — tires, batteries, liquid paint, fuel, and appliances with Freon. Check the prohibited items list before you load, and call if you are not sure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my project fills the box before I am done?

Call us and we will swap it. Same-day swaps are normal on construction sites. Next-day is standard for homes.

Can I load over the top of the box?

No. Load level with the top rails so we can tarp it and haul it safe. If you need more room, size up or ask for a swap.

How do I pick between two sizes?

Size up. A half-full 30 yard costs the same as a full one, and it beats overfilling a 15 yard and paying for a swap.
